Hey Jane, Thanks for posting.
I find it interesting that an amateur performer is listed under emerging performer, Ian Andrew, performer, Pirates of Penzance, and a performer from co-op production that was Australia council funded, Guy O’Grady, actor, An Enemy of the People (ActNow Theatre for Social Change) is listed as an amatuer performer?
Is that correct? What do these categories mean?
I’m just the messenger, not a member so I’m afraid I can’t help. I agree, it seems a little confused and I would love an explanation of those categories and choices. I also find it interesting some people are “actors” and some are “performers”, and I am at a loss to their definition of “innovation” (not a comment on quality, it’s just a horrible thing to try and define in any circumstance, and I don’t think I would call Vs Macbeth nor Harbinger particularity innovative. Didn’t see the third.).
it’s a long running confusion amongst this particular group of critics and yet another reason why we desperately need a generation change in regards to performing arts criticism in adelaide.
given that the australia council selection criteria only allows them to fund ‘professional work’ in the emerging artists category you’d think that would in itself qualify ActNow as professional.
as for the innovation award, well, i think that it demonstrates just how many problems crop up when you create a set of awards in this way. the whole thing is a compromised and ultimately self serving process.
Harbinger does not deserve a nomination. It was an uneven project saved by Nathan’s excellent Bowie moment. He deserves to win for individual talent and fingers crossed for Matthew Crook as the emerging talent. Also hope Southern Youth Theatre gets a mention for their underrated rock musical which was lots of fun. Innovation award should go to The Border Project for their body of work over last few years.
[…] Not too impressed that the Adelaide Critics Circle Award Nominees (and updated winners) made it in to my top five to be honest, because I’m very unimpressed that I […]
